| LOCATED IN PLANTATION COUNTRY, the Spanish Lake Basin is bordered by Bayou Manchac, an Indian short-cut from the Mississippi River to New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico. YOU WILL SEE a green, moss-draped alligator swamp, a 700-year-old cypress tree with five-foot-tall knees, and the spectacular Cypress Flats, a lake of ancient cypress trees teeming with egrets, herons, ibis, cormorants and hundreds of bird species migrating along the Mississippi River Flyway YOU'LL BE INSPIRED by the beauty of giant old-growth cypress trees, abundant wildlife and the many cultures which settled here. Experience their way of life in a furnished Cajun Heritage Museum depicting a bygone era. WHILE CRUISING on the comfortable, canopied (and all-weather) Alligator Queen, you will hear about wetlands ecology, wildlife, the exiled Cajuns and the rich cultural legacy of the Spanish Lake Basin.
